April Bey: Atlantica, The Gilda Region and Rights and Rituals: The Making of African American Debutante Culture at California African American Museum (CAAM) from Wed, May 26, 2021 to Mon, Jan 17, 2022 ( Exhibition )

Bahamian-American artist April Bey’s immersive installation looks at Black Americans’ historical embrace of space travel and extraterrestrial visioning, beginning in the 1960s and later termed Afrofuturism. Curated by Mar Hollingsworth, Visual Arts Curator and Program Manager.

Rights and Rituals: The Making of African American Debutante Culture traces the history of social organizations such as The Links, Incorporated, the Questionettes, and the 20th Century Onyx Club, which challenged institutionalized stereotypes of Black girls. Curated by Taylor Bythewood-Porter, Assistant Curator.
