Jeffery Scales: “45 RPMs; 45 Years of Photography in Music
Annenberg Space for Photography (Century City)
This free lecture and discussion features photographer Jeffrey Scales, who began photographing the Black Panthers and other political activists of the 1960’s at the age of 13 and is currently editor for The Sunday Review and The Book Review. Scales’ photographs are in the permanent collections of institutions including MoMA, The George Eastman House, and The Baltimore Museum of Art. This event is presented in conjunction with the Annenberg’s current exhibition, Who Shot Rock and Roll.

Artists + Institutions: What Is the Common Ground?”
Schindler House (West Hollywood)
This free interactive event, produced as of part of SOCiAL: Art + People, features salon-style discussions hosted by guest artists and representatives from various Los Angeles art institutions. Anonymous dialog prompts will be presented to the public for an evening of critical conversation and debate regarding the common ground between artists and art institutions.


Volume 5 – “Revisiting the Revisiting of Feminism

This roundtable discussion takes a 2003 conversation between artists including Leslie Dick, Sharon Hayes, Mary Kelly, and Kerry Tribe as a starting point to consider modern feminist art; the discussion will be moderated by Shana Lutker. This event is a part of X-TRA’s 15 Years in 15 Days.


Art + Architecture Focus on Malibu Tour
Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University (Malibu)
LACMA’s Art Museum Council presents its inaugural Art + Architecture Focus Tour. Since 1956, the Tour has provided behind-the-scenes tours of architecturally significant homes with significant art collections. This event begins with a lecture on the Weisman Museum’s current Pop Culture exhibition. Attendees then tour two Malibu properties, one of which is constructed with the recycled parts of a decommissioned Boeing 747-200 aircraft. Tickets are $350; for tickets and more information email


Volume 7 – “A Talk With Images and Music

This talk features a discussion based on four excerpts from Jan Tumlir’s article “The Magic Circle: On The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper and the Invention of Art Rock,” featured in Volume 7 of X-TRA, and the current issue article “Dark-Side Minimalism.” This free event is part of X-TRA’s 15 Years in 15 Days.

Contemporary Art Conversations #13
Offramp Gallery (Pasadena)
Offramp Gallery presents the thirteenth in an ongoing series of dialogues about art, artists, and exhibitions. The free event features Ezrha Jean Black, Peter Frank, critic Shana Nys Dambrot, and artist/writer John O’Brien. Art historian Betty Ann Brown will moderate.


Volume 8 – William Leavitt presents Habitat
ForYourArt at 6020 Wilshire Blvd. (Miracle Mile)
This theatrical event creates a dialog environment for two groups of neighbors, who engage each other in adjoining suburban backyards of a small mid-western town. A full production of the play will be presented in April 2013 at The Kitchen in New York City. This performance is part of X-TRA’s 15 Years in 15 Days.


Volume 9 – 1 Image 1 Minute
ForYourArt at 6020 Wilshire Blvd. (Miracle Mile)
This free event is based on Micol Hebron’s 1 Image 1 Minute, a column and live event in which participants selected a significant photograph to discuss for one minute. In this live version for X-TRA’s 15th anniversary celebration, 30 Angelenos from various facets of the art world discuss a variety of chosen images. Participants include Jerri Allyn, Sarah Beadle, Cassandra Coblentz, Michael Dahan, and Corazon del Sol. This event is part of  X-TRA’s 15 Years in 15 Days.


Volume 10 – The Art of Criticism

This panel discussion features Sharon Mizota, Doug Harvey, Aram Moshayedi and moderator Damon Willick discussing art criticism. This free event is presented as part of X-TRA’s 15 Years in 15 Days.

Art Lecture: Pae White
Hammer Museum (Westwood)
This event features a lecture from Los Angeles-based artist Pae White, whose work has been featured internationally at venues including MoMA, the Tate Modern, and LACMA. This free lecture is presented as part of the UCLA Department of Art’s Artist Lecture series.
