“Giant Leaps For Mankind” and the Future of the Past

This free talk by art history and archeology professor Justin St. P. Walsh explores how humanity’s expanding reach off the planet and into the universe can be integrated into our sense of history. The conversation to also touch on the obstacles to achieving this goal.

Africa Speaks, America Answers

This conversation between UCLA historian Robin D. G. Kelley and KCRW DJ Tom Schnabel will focus on the musical discourse that occurred in the  late 1950s and early 1960s when African and American musicians began influencing each other via jazz and swing music. Kelley will sign copies of his new book Africa Speaks, America Answers: Modern Jazz in Revolutionary Times after the discussion.

Architectones Panel Discussion

A panel discussion will be held with speakers Xavier Veilhan, Neutra scholar Barbara Lamprecht, art critic Jan Tumlir, and Dr. Raymond Neutra, son of the architect; the discussion will be moderated by exhibition curator Francois Perrin. SATURDAY, AUGUST 11

Food and Food Systems in the 21st Century
Fowler Museum (Westwood)

Presented by TEDx, this day long event will explore local and global scale decisions regarding food and food production which will have profound impact on our planet in the coming years. Featured speakers include Future Cities Lab’s Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno, biologist John Marshall, Tara Kolla of Silver Lake Farms, and attorney, rancher, and author Nicolette Hahn Niman. Admission is $60 and include museum gallery access, lunch, and a post-event reception. Tickets are available online.

Discussion: Lisa Little and Emily White

This free event, part of the Museum’s Insight Artist Talk series, features Project Room artists Lisa Little and Emily White of Layer in a conversation with Frances Anderton of KCRW’s DnA. The discussion will focus on their LAYER, Little and White’s current sculptural installation on the facade of PMCA.
