Children of the Plumed Serpent: Constructing Elite Status
LACMA (Miracle Mile)
This free, two-part lecture, held in conjunction with the exhibition Children of the Plumed Serpent, will explore the construction of elite status in Mesoamerica. “The Power of Dress in Mesoamerica,” a talk by Occidental College’s Lisa Sousa, will examine the ways noble men and women used clothing to embody status and qualities of leadership. “Royal Palaces in Ancient and Colonial Oaxaca,” a talk from UCLA’s Kevin Terraciano, will focus on royal residences in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
