Robin Rhode: Imaginary Exhibition
L&M Arts (Venice)
Opening reception for the South African-born, Berlin-based artist’s Los Angeles debut. Rhode blends fine art, street culture, and performance. His work spans a variety of media that includes photography, animation, and sculpture. On view through April 21, 2012.
Kelly Poe: For the Wild and Phil Chang: Cache, Active
LA><ART (Culver City)
Opening reception for solo exhibitions at LA><ART by Kelly Poe and Phil Chang. For the Wild is the collaborative manifestation of Poe’s correspondences with seven activists. In her letters, Poe asked them to describe the places that keep them sane and what time of day to visit these sites, so she could capture the location’s undisturbed beauty as it existed in their mind’s eye. Chang’s project, Cache, Active encompasses a series of photographs that expose and fade in the light necessary to view them. Both on view through April 14, 2012.
Lillian Bassman: A Life 1917-2012
Peter Fetterman Gallery (Santa Monica)
Opening reception for an exhibition of photographs by the late Lillian Bassman. Bassman, a magazine art director and fashion photographer, “achieved renown in the 1940s and ’50s with high-contrast, dreamy portraits of sylphlike models, then re-emerged in the ’90s as a fine-art photographer after a cache of lost negatives resurfaced.” On view through June 9, 2012.
Visionary Landscape II
Christopher Grimes Gallery (Santa Monica)
A group exhibition featuring new works by Marco Brambilla, Sharon Ellis, Takehito Koganezawa, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, and Richard T. Walker. Each work is rendered uniquely through either film collage, photography, drawing, painting, or video performance. The works reveal a relationship between our physical environment and the creative and psychological reactions to the natural landscape. On view through April 21, 2012.
The F-Stops Here
Gallery 825 (West Hollywood)
Opening reception for this cross-cultural photography exhibit, featuring Los Angeles Art Association photo-based artists alongside international photographers. Juried by Silvia Sonnenschmidt and Thomas Volkmann, this group show will feature work by Aras Karimi, Tony Kelly, Echo Lew, Adele Mills, Sinan Revell, Liesje Reyskens, Gwen Samuels, Heather Scholl, Philipp Schumacher, Wouter Stelwagen, Phil Tarley, Lee Tonks and Michael B.
