A collaborative exhibition by Aaron Curry and Richard Hawkins. The installation consists of the artists’ collages, sculptures, paintings, drawings on paper, and hybrid works including three rooms covered in cardboard wallpaper with a cartoonish wood grain pattern lain over colorful striping.

Beefcakes and Boundaries: The Art of Bruce Bellas

An exhibition of photographs by Bruce Bellas, or Bruce of Los Angeles as he came to be known, and contemporary artists who’ve been influenced by Bellas. The works by Bellas in this exhibition come from The Male Figure, a physique magazine published by Bellas. Bellas photographed male bodies from Muscle Beach in Venice, CA and published an extensive body of homoerotic work.

Día de los Muertos Exhibition: Revival
Self Help Graphics & Art (Boyle Heights)

The theme of this year’s Day of the Dead show is Revival in celebration of Self Help Graphics & Art’s new home in Boyle Heights. The works created for this show are in response to the iconography and aesthetics unique to this holiday. On Wednesday, November 2, Self Help Graphics & Art is holding a Día de los Muertos celebration from 5-11pm including a walking procession meeting at Mariachi Plaza at 5pm.

Mr. CHIP Goes to Washington
SCI-Arc (Downtown)

The focus of this exhibition is the SCI-Arc/Caltech’s Hanwha team’s entry for the Solar CHIP–the Compact, Hyper-Insulated Prototype–House in the competition recently hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington D.C.

Young Literati 4th Annual Toast
Richard J. Riordan Central Library (Downtown)

Shepard Fairey and Rachel Small host the Young Literati’s celebration of the 139 year history of the Los Angeles Public Library at the 4th Annual Toast. There will be music, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and readings and performances by Russell Brand, Demetri Martin, Henry Rollins and more. The event costs $150 and tickets are available online.

A musical event featuring performances by east-side/downtown artists whose work reflects a surrender, a pushing of personal boundaries, and an embodiment of what author Robert Henri calls “the art spirit.” There will be performances by Eric Byers, Morgan Gee, Jonelle Vette, and Sadie Siegel.

In true Machine Project fashion, DMV: After Dark, Machine Project’s 2011 Benefit, will feature such activities as a surrealistic waiting room, a fake ID station with photo booth, a human vending machine, competitive sobriety tests, workshops on breaking into/out of automobiles (check out a video here), music for car parts, and blindfold parallel parking. LAXART’s Biannual Benefit Auction and Party

Hosted by LAXART with Co-chairs Sima Familant and Lisa Schiff, LAXART’s 2011 benefit will feature live and silent auctions highlighting works by some of L.A.’s favorite emerging and mid-career artists as well as cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and VIP champagne reception. Tickets can be purchased online starting at $100 with VIP tickets available, as well as a bundle of 12 tickets for $1000 which also includes a Curators Council membership.
